Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (hardcover)
collected by Alvin Schwartz, illustrated by Brett Helquist
Harper, an Imprint of Harper Collins Publishers
Library of Congress catalog card number:  2009934072
ISBN:  9780060835194

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a classic children's horror collection drawn heavily from folklore and urban legends, the first in a series of three.  This first book contains 29 short stories, including "The Big Toe," "The Thing," "The Haunted House," "The Hearse Song," "The Dead Man's Brains," "The Hook," "High Beams," "The Babysitter," "The Viper" and "The Ghost with the Bloody Fingers."

The Scary Stories series is listed as being the most challenged series of books from 1990–1999 (
for its violence), and continued to rank among the most challenged from 2000–2009 by the American Library Association.  The surreal, nightmarish illustrations contained within are also a frequently challenged component of the original books.  Like most of the challenged, restricted, removed or banned books, Scary Stories rates as a literary high-mark, as well as one of the most widely read and remembered.

In January, 2016 it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would develop the books for a feature film, adapted by writer John August.

Description:

"READ" poster
Sting for America's Libraries

Copyright 1984 American Library Association.

Produced by Marketing By Design.

You are bidding on an official American Library Association (ALA Publishing) poster from their Celebrity READ campaign.  Created by the ALA in 1985, each READ poster features a famous person posing with their favorite book (or books).  All celebrities are chosen because of his/her popularity, appeal and visibility to a general audience.  The ALA tries to feature a range of diverse talent who would be great spokespersons for reading to both adults and children.  If you've ever visited your local library (which you hopefully have), you've probably seen a poster like this with an actor, musician or other star persona spotlighted.

This particular poster features Sting from The Police dressed in period costume, reading Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in front of a castle.  This was part of the first series in ALA's Celebrity READ posters, released in 1985 (the 1st set included
Bette Midler, Bill Cosby, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Sting).  The Sting poster is considered an extremely rare and highly sought-after collectible.

A great back-to-school gift, for your child's room or college dorm...or, celebrate the kids leaving the nest by turning their old room into your new study/library, and hang this fantastic poster there!

CONDITION:

I would consider this poster excellent, suitable for framing.  However, because of its age it cannot be considered "mint."  Very, very minimal wrinkling or other signs of aging.  No evidence of tape removal or tack marks from being displayed, and the corners are all still sharp.
