Description:

"READ" poster
David Bowie for America's Libraries

Copyright American Library Association, 1986

Design: Belinoff/Kashiwagi
Photo: Davis & Starr

Keep your electric eye on this, babe!  You are bidding on an official American Library Association (ALA Publishing) poster from their Celebrity READ campaign.  Created by the ALA in 1985, each READ poster features a famous person posing with their favorite book (or books).  All celebrities are chosen because of his/her popularity, appeal and visibility to a general audience.  The ALA tries to feature a range of diverse talent who would be great spokespersons for reading to both adults and children.  If you've ever visited your local library (which you hopefully have), you've probably seen a poster like this with an actor, musician or other star persona spotlighted.

This particular poster features David Bowie in a "Roots" letterman jacket, reading The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (The Idiot was also the title of Iggy Pop's first solo album, which was written and recorded with Bowie).  David's poster was part of the third series of ALA's Celebrity READ posters, released in 1987 (the 3rd set included
Diahann Carrol and Paul Newman, along with The Thin White Duke).

This poster was re-issued by the ALA in 2016, due to popular demand after Bowie's passing, but THIS IS AN ORIGINAL FROM '87!

A great back-to-school gift, for your child's room or college dorm...or, celebrate the kids leaving the nest by turning their old room into your new study/library, and hang this fantastic poster there!

CONDITION:

I would consider this poster in great shape, suitable for framing even.  However, because of its age and because it was once displayed at a library, it cannot be considered "mint."  There are some faded signs of tape removal from hanging (at the corners, and between the letters "R" and "E" in the word READ near the top, as well as at the bottom edge below the heel of Bowie's foot), but the poster itself does not seem to have faded much or at all.  Very, very minimal wrinkling or other aging, and the corners are still sharp.
