Description:

"READ" poster
Paul Newman for America's Libraries

Copyright 1986 American Library Association

Photo: Ron Phillips

You are bidding on an official American Library Association (ALA Publishing) poster from their Celebrity READ campaign.  Created by the ALA in 1985, each READ poster features a famous person posing with their favorite book (or books).  All celebrities are chosen because of his/her popularity, appeal and visibility to a general audience.  The ALA tries to feature a range of diverse talent who would be great spokespersons for reading to both adults and children.  If you've ever visited your local library (which you hopefully have), you've probably seen a poster like this with an actor, musician or other star persona spotlighted.

This particular poster features Paul Newman stretched out on a pool table, reading Star Warriors by William Broad.  Certainly, the pose/setting is an homage to Newman's classic poolhall films, The Hustler and its recent sequel The Color Of Money...but I like to think of this as the classy version of Burt Reynolds' Cosmo pic.  This was part of the third series in ALA's Celebrity READ posters, released in 1987 (the 3rd set included David Bowie and Diahann Carrol, along with Mr. Newman
).

A great back-to-school gift, for your child's room or college dorm...or, celebrate the kids leaving the nest by turning their old room into your new study/library, and hang this fantastic poster there!

CONDITION:

I would consider this poster in pretty good shape.  It is a bit wavy from rolled storage, but I would imagine it could be flattened, and should be no issue if framed (flat between glass or plastic).  A few spots of wrinkling/aging.  No evidence of tape removal or tack marks from being displayed, and the corners are all still sharp.
